SMITHEREENS

Directed by Susan Seidleman

$8.00 ( American Cinematheque member) ; $13.00 (general admission)

Los Feliz 3 | ‘Don’t Knock the Rock’

Q&A with actor Susan Berman. Moderated by Lyndsey Parker

Susan Seidelman established her distinctive vision of New York City with this debut feature, the lo-fi original for her vibrant portraits of women reinventing themselves. After escaping New Jersey, the quintessentially punk Wren (Susan Berman)—a spark plug in fishnets—moves to the city with the mission of becoming famous. When not pasting up self-promotional flyers or hanging at the Peppermint Lounge, she’s getting involved with Paul (Brad Rinn), the nicest guy to ever live in a van next to the highway, and Eric (Richard Hell), an aloof rocker. Shot on 16mm film that captures the grit and glam of downtown in the 1980s, with an alternately moody and frenetic soundtrack by the Feelies and others, SMITHEREENS—the first American independent film to compete for the Palme d’Or—is an unfaded snapshot of a bygone era.

DORY PREVIN: ON MY WAY TO WHERE

Directed by Julia Greenberg and Dianna Dilworth moderated by Jessica Hundley

$8.00 (American Cinematheque member); $13.00 (general admission)

Los Feliz 3 | Q&A with filmmakers Julia Greenberg and Dianna Dilworth

Writing and singing the unvarnished truth about one’s buried secret life experiences is more common today than when Dory Previn wrote brilliant, disturbing, and darkly funny songs in the 1970s. Previn began as an Academy Award nominated lyricist for Hollywood musicals with songs for Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland & Dionne Warwick before a tabloid scandal and public breakdown led to her re-emergence as a cult artist in the Laurel Canyon scene. The film taps archives for a story in Previn’s voice. J. Smith-Cameron reads the voices in Dory’s head. Dory’s eloquent articulation of her relationship with her voices anticipates the burgeoning Hearing Voices and Mad Pride movements that are revolutionizing how we understand mental health.
